Description:

Dexter … The Gentle Giant Needs Your help again. A majestic 62kg, Dexter is quite simply, a stunner. Through no fault of his own (due to a marriage breakup), this handsome and incredibly affectionate boy is searching for his forever “Royal Home.”

The “Goofy” Side: Dexter is a big boy with an even bigger personality. He is famous for his “morning songs” … he’s very vocal and loves to serenade his family as they wake up. Despite his size, he’s a bit of a couch potato. One good walk a day is usually enough to tuck him in for a long, lazy nap. He is perfectly house-trained and a dream to have in the home.

Social Life & Plays: Dexter currently lives with a 12kg Beagle .. and another shepherd dog . He “pulls his punches” when playing with smaller dogs and is incredibly gentle once he knows them. He would ideally love a home with another dog to play with.

Kids: He adores children. However, at 62kg, he’s a “heavy” playmate and could accidentally knock over toddlers. He is protective of his “pack,” so introductions to new friends need to be managed.

Cats: He has lived with them previously, though not recently. The Loyal Guardian Dexter has guarding in his DNA. He takes his job of patrolling the garden seriously and will bark to let you know someone is approaching.

Training: He is bright and very food-motivated, which makes training a breeze. He is strong-minded but thrives when he knows his human is the leader. Out & About, because he is a large guard breed, he can be suspicious of strangers and initially dominant with new dogs. For this reason, he is walked on a lead with a muzzle. With a confident, experienced owner, his recall and social manners have massive potential for growth. He walks well on a lead but is physically very strong.

What Dexter Needs: An owner familiar with large guard breeds who understands leadership and boundaries. A home with a large, secure garden with grass to patrol. Someone who will continue his socialization and show him he’s not “in charge” of the front door.

Dexter is a loyal, sweet, and goofy soul who just wants to be part of a family again. If you have the space in your heart for this 62kg bundle of love, please get in touch.

Thank you for your interest in Dexter. If you would like to apply to adopt one of our dogs, please read the ‘How do I Adopt’ pages, where you can find more information about the process and the costs involved.

As you can imagine, each one of our dogs is very precious to us, they haven’t had the best start in life and therefore it is absolutely crucial we find the right homes for them. When you complete a registration form, please tell us as much as you can about why you are looking to adopt a dog and how you think you can meet their needs. Every dog is an individual and our amazing rehoming team will know exactly what type of home each dog needs to thrive. For example, will the dog cope with a small garden or is it the type of dog who needs to live in a rural environment? Will the dog enjoy being around children, or is it best suited to an adult only home? Will it cope sharing a home with other pets, or is it best as an only dog? Are you outdoorsy types who like to go hiking, or would you prefer a dog who is happy to snuggle up on the sofa with you? Our rehoming team will be very familiar with the needs of each of our dogs and the information you provide on your application form will help them to match you with the right dog.

We’d love to chat…
