A Letter to Asher’s prospective forever family from his foster mum:
Hello, My name is Sharon & I am Asher’s foster mum & I just wanted to share with you what am amazingly gentle, loving, resilient & brave dog Asher is.
My hubby & I have had dogs in our lives for a such a long time & we have always chosen to rescue dogs. We have rescued from the UK & Romania & currently have 3 dogs- Ralf, Ed & Cerys. Last year we became foster carers, a role I absolutely adore. Since coming to stay with us last October Asher has just blossomed & is very different from the withdrawn, super anxious & vigilant dog we collected. His progress is very much at his pace which is at a slow speed (one paw at a time) but he has felt safe enough to share his fun-loving side & has started to trust us although but it is our view that this will be a long journey for him.
He very much likes familiar surroundings & people & can become a little sensitive especially to unexpected noise; Asher when uncertain or nervous will withdraw. He is not at all aggressive in his nature or behaviour. He is getting used to visitors to our home & when one of my dog-walking friend visits Asher gets so excited he will do a ‘trotting dance’ & whistle.
Asher’s greatest loves are our other dogs, being outside, toast & settees He loves being around our dogs & loves being outside doing ‘zoomies’ around our garden with them. He will jump on the bed in the morning with our gang & they will all have a snooze for an extra 15-30 minutes. He recognises the sound of the toaster & will dash from wherever he is to the kitchen; something he has learnt from Ralf. Asher continues to love a settee & is at his most relaxed when he is stretched out. He is no trouble at all to take out for walks. Although he is a little reluctant to have his harness put on, once this has been secured, he then begins to do his little dance showing his excitement. His recall is very good & when he is off the lead in the secure field, he is happy to explore but is also happy to come back when called.
Asher is caring & considerate; for example, when we are out walking if I have him on the lead he goes at a slower pace & will periodically wait for me to catch up. When we come back from a rainy walk Asher is more interested in making sure the other dogs are dried off by licking them than being dried off himself. Today Cerys slipped while they were running around, Asher went up to her & licked her face to make sure, she was okay. He is instinctively empathetic. His interaction with dogs & people is very gentle. He is not a barker, Ed is a ‘talker’ & Asher will bark when he does but has never initiated any barking; He prefers to whistle when he gets excited. Cerys is full of issues, but Asher just works around her & is calm & caring in his interactions with her.
When we are out & about, Asher continues to be unsure of traffic (which is very much noise related; the bigger the vehicle the noisier it is the more unsure Asher becomes) but he is fine with people walking by, runners, cyclists & other dog walkers. He can still be nervous but at the same time is also curious.
Asher has always had a good appetite & enjoys his meals. He will wait his turn for treats & his meals & does not snatch- again showing his gentle side. Asher knows his name, the word ‘no’ & will happily go with what is being asked of him – very much goes with the flow. Asher has always been a clean dog & we can trust him to let us know when he needs to go out. Asher no longer needs his crate & sleeps with our dogs in the front room on the settee (of course!!).
Asher is still anxious about men, but this is lessening & he has shown on numerous occasions that he has the potential to interact & engage. Asher has found that what suits him best is to approach & retreat on a few occasions before becoming more comfortable in their company
We are exceptionally proud of Asher & the progress he has made especially within such a short period of time & he has brought a lot of happiness to our home. He needs a quiet family home with a good-sized garden & another dog. He feels more relaxed & safer with familiar people in a familiar environment. He is a typical Romanian dog, in that he has his quirks & it is just a case of us being mindful & accommodating his needs. I am unconditionally confident that Asher will make a fabulous positive contribution to his forever family & will always have a very special place in my heart.

To make this easier, his amazing foster parents have a self-contained annex on-site where potential adopters can stay, allowing you to spend quality, pressure-free time getting to know Asher in a space where he feels safe.

As you can imagine, each one of our dogs is very precious to us, they haven’t had the best start in life and therefore it is absolutely crucial we find the right homes for them. When you complete a registration form, please tell us as much as you can about why you are looking to adopt a dog and how you think you can meet their needs. Every dog is an individual and our amazing rehoming team will know exactly what type of home each dog needs to thrive. For example, will the dog cope with a small garden or is it the type of dog who needs to live in a rural environment? Will the dog enjoy being around children, or is it best suited to an adult only home? Will it cope sharing a home with other pets, or is it best as an only dog? Are you outdoorsy types who like to go hiking, or would you prefer a dog who is happy to snuggle up on the sofa with you? Our rehoming team will be very familiar with the needs of each of our dogs and the information you provide on your application form will help them to match you with the right dog.
